SOFT TISSUE MANIPULATION
Physiotherapists regularly use soft tissue mobilisation as an effective treatment method for a wide range of conditions.
WHAT IS SOFT TISSUE MOBILISATION?
Soft tissue mobilisation is an umbrella term including any physiotherapy technique involving soft tissue movement and there are many different methods of soft tissue mobilisation.
Soft tissue mobilisation techniques include:
Massage therapy
Muscle energy techniques
Neuromuscular techniques
Trigger point release
Deep transverse friction massage
Cupping- stretches soft tissue using a vacuum and the soft tissue is drawn upwards and stretched.
WHAT CONDITIONS CAN SOFT TISSUE MOBILISATION TREAT?
Soft tissue mobilisation is a suitable treatment method for any musculoskeletal condition. A musculoskeletal condition may have secondary complications which lead to inflammation in the muscle and prevention of the muscle lengthening and contracting making a particular muscle or group of muscles weak and tight with pain.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SOFT TISSUE MOBILISATION?
A series of events occurs when your soft tissue is mobilised. By applying soft tissue mobilisation techniques a physiotherapist is able to assist with the break-down of collagen fibres and realignment in the correct way which promotes proper healing and decreased scar tissue. You can also reduce muscle hypersensitivity by stimulating the muscle with normal movement which will break down the pain cycle and decrease the pain you feel.
The particular benefits you receive of soft tissue mobilisation will be based on your symptoms and goals and also the type of soft tissue mobilisation being used.
Benefits of soft tissue mobilisation include:
Maximised performance
Reduced tension
Improved posture
Maintenance of healthy muscles
Relaxation
Normalised movement and prevention of adverse dysfunctional movement
Pain is reduced due to decreased hypersensitivity within the muscle group
Increased circulation and increased blood flow aid the exchange of nutrients and removal of toxins.
