What is Pilates?
Pilates is an exercise system that focuses on stretching and strengthening your whole body in order to improve muscle strength, posture, balance and flexibility.
The exercise system was created in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates and includes aspects of yoga, martial arts and western forms of exercise. A lot of Joseph Pilates exercises were passed on to his apprentices and they then passed on the exercises through word of mouth. There are 34 original exercises and they are known as the classical repertoire. Pilates has grown steadily in popularity across the globe.
Pilates is performed by people of all ages and the exercise requires physical and mental training with the aim being to develop your core stability your deep postural muscles.
What conditions can Pilates treat?
Your physiotherapist will carry out a full subjective and objective examination to determine what is causing your symptoms. A treatment programme will be provided following assessment and Pilates may be one of the treatment methods chosen for your rehabilitation.
You may also wish to have Pilates treatment in order to strengthen your body and improve your balance.
Pilates is often used to aid several different conditions and can help people with:
- Poor strength
- Poor posture
- Back pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Pregnancy
Pilates has been used a lot with cricketers, dancers, and athletes to help improve movement control, strength and prevent injury. Pilates can be practiced as a beginner because it is a progressive exercise programme and can be modified for individuals.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Few rigorous research studies have been conducted to examine the effects of Pilates however a lot of people report there are benefits of Pilates.
Benefits of Pilates include:
- Increased joint stability
- Improved posture
- Enhanced muscle tone
- Increased wellbeing
- Prevention of injury
Pilates can be incorporated into a treatment programme along with other treatments or it can be performed as a stand-alone treatment, providing effective rehabilitation.
Pilates is not effective as an exercise for weight loss though it can be used along with healthy eating and aerobic exercise to assist with toning your body.
